5. RVBY-Rugby Turnier in Bayreuth U8, U10, U12
6. Mai 2018

U8:
Bericht: Rica Hiemstra

Rugby Turnier Trento (Italien) U14
5. Mai 2018

U14:
Bericht: Gennaro de Lucia
On Saturday the 5th of May, the U14 team of the München RFC travelled to Trento (IT) to join two other teams: the local rugby U14 team and a Dutch team, The Dukes from Hertogenbosch (NL), in a 13-a-side International triangular tournament.
The first match saw Trento playing against The Dukes. It was a balanced match, where both teams put a lot of strength and commitment into their game. The rules applied in Holland for the U14 category are, let's say, different and this reflected their way of playing: tough, hard, somewhat ruthless, at the border of „U14 World Rugby“ standards. This allowed them to take an initial lead. However, after an initial adjustment phase, Trento got back into the game and the match ended up in a draw.
Just the time to rest and gain some strength, that the Trento boys were back on the pitch to face the MRFC Lions. Obviously, the energy put into the match against the Dutch „friends“ took some toll off the Italian team. The Lions started very confidently and after a winning ruck, Anton got the ball and deposited it over the try line. Quentin converted the try and took the score to 7-0 for the guests from Munich! For a while, during the first half, the pattern of the game showed two teams holding up against each other. Attacks turned into defence and vice-versa. Eventually, just before the end, Connor got a beautiful pass on the touch line out of a maul and run through the Trento lines scoring the second try for the Lions! Quentin, did not miss the conversion and the first half closed with the MRFC leading 14-0. A quick briefing by Pablo (trainer) and Gennaro/Marco (managers), water and some substitutions and the second half started. Our hosts from Trento were visibly tired, after 45 minutes of hard rugby game (30 minutes with the Dutch team and 15 with the MRFC). After a few minutes, Timo, who for this tournament was deployed in a different position (fly-half or centre, instead of winger), started to get the flavour of it and, after receiving the ball from a scrum, he swivelled through the lines and scored the third try! This time, in his attempt to convert the try, Quentin got the post. After a few minutes, Trento scored the only try against the MRFC and it was beautifully converted by their kicker. Not long before the end of the match, Timo scored another try and, unfortunately, Quentin this time kicked outside the posts. Final score: Trento 7 - MRFC 24.
In spite of the deceptive score, the match had taken quite some energies from the Lions. We have to remember that, in Bavaria, we are not used to play full-mode matches, i.e., in a triangular tournament, 15 minutes per half-time and on an almost regular pitch (it is just 10 mt narrower, but just as long as an adult-size pitch). As soon as our second match against The Dukes started, the Dutch guys took immediate advantage and scored three tries one after the other, before our Lions could react and put one ball behind their try line, thanks to Timo, again. Quentin did not miss this time and took two points home with the conversion. The first half ended 19-7 for the Dutch Team. During the interval, there was some serious talk from Pablo, Gennaro and Marco. It was clear that the MRFC squad was not fit enough to hold a 60-minute match, however, what really played a major role in the score difference were silly mistakes due to lack of concentration, lack of proper tackling and delivering below expectation by a couple of players. The second half started similarly to the first one and ended up in the same way as the first one: The Dukes scored three tries more and the Lions scored one try with Anton, with corresponding conversion by Quentin. Final score: Dukes 36 – MRFC 14. This second match could have been won, or at least drawn, if … well, let's leave it at that and let's hope that the boys learned from the defeat. After all, with one victory and one loss, we arrived second in the tournament. Still something to be proud of, taking everything into account.
It was a beautiful day, a great tournament and an important experience for our Lions' cubs. Overall, we ended up second and got a nice trophy with a plate to remember the event. This kind of tournaments are essential for the growth of the MRFC boys and we will continue to try.
We would like to thank the organisation of the ASD Rugby Trento. First of all, for having allowed our participation and secondly, for the warm welcome and hospitality we received. We will try to make more of this friendship by mutual and more frequent invitations to participate in full-mode tournaments.
Next weekend, the U14 will be back in Italy again, Rovato (BS), for another International tournament. This time, there will be 20 teams coming from different parts of Italy and Europe. Whatever will be the outcome, we are confident that it will be a wonderful and precious experience for our cubs, in preparation of the U14 German Championship, to be held in Heidelberg on 16-17.06.

4. RVBY-Rugby Turnier in Nürnberg U12 und U14
15. April 2018

U12:
Bericht: Martin Kerschensteiner
The first Bavarian tournament of the year 2018 took place on the pitch of the TSV1846 Nürnberg and contrary to the traditional Bavarian Rugby experience this time the sun was shining, the pitch was dry and at least for the U12 more grass than mud. Our team overall made good use of the friendly conditions and after a slow start played mostly decent y games despite the fact that some of our players experienced some “Frühjahrsmüdigkeit” along the way. The end results were positive as well as our team won all three games to finish in first place. Special mentions deserve Bruno, who came back from a stomach flu within the same tournament, Leo, who channeled his inner Tom Brady to throw a perfect pass across the field, while being being tackled and Felix D, who played very well in his first Bavarian tournament. Finally, a big “thanks you” to our coach David, who instructed, warmed up and coached the team and also helped out as a referee for the Under 10 games (despite the fact that this meant a painful separation from his well-deserved post-tournament beer).

U14:
Bericht: Gennaro De Lucia
The second part of the season 2017/18 started with a transfer to Nürnberg. The bus organised by the MRFC left Ostbahnhof at 8.10 on Sunday morning, pretty full with players of all categories (U10-16) and some accompagning adults. After one stop north of Munich to pick up more passengers, we arrived at the pitch at around 10.00ish. Just the time to distribute the jerseys and shorts (most are too small for an oversized U14 team!) and the boys were warming up for the 1st match. During the captains' meeting, the two 8-man MRFC teams were reinforced with two additional players each. Darius and Daniel, from the Rugby Bad Reichenhall, joined the Lions. Yannick and Julian, from the Rugby Club Augsburg, joined the Tigers.
The first match saw the Lions playing against the Tigers! What a way to start a tournament and warm up for the day! After a pretty balanced beginning, with both team scoring one try each, with Anton and Daniel C., the Lions started putting some distance. Anton scored another two tries and Connor closed the gap with one try. He also stopped Philipp just a couple of meters from the try line with a flying tackle thereby, saving the Lions from a larger gap, just before half-time.The second half was definitely all in favour of the Lions, with Philipp, Chris and Anton (a real Lion in this match), closing the count at six tries against the two of the Tigers. Even if the result may give the impression of a clear superiority of the Lions, the Tigers fought very hard. As we said, we saw strong tackles from their side and they were a bit unlucky to miss a few opportunities with Giorgio and Quentin.
In their second game, the Lions met the Spielgemeinschaft StuSta/Wurzburg RK. Maybe due to the previous demanding encounter with the Tigers, the Lions started this match very confidently. At kick-off, Timo perfectly caught the ball kicked by the StuSta player and off he ran through the opponents' lines, with little they could do to stop him. This was only the beginning. The Lions contained the attacks of the StuSta/WRK players very effectively, with decisive tackles and strong rucks. We also saw beautiful off-loads which gave the opportunity to almost every one to score a try. Timo, twice more, Fynn, twice, Anton, Darius, Jérémie and Adam, with one each, took the final score to 9 tries for the Lions. Without conceding any to the opponents!
In their second match, the Tigers met the Spielgemeinschaft RC Regensburg/RC Unterföhring/R Nürnberg. The Tigers were very motivated to make up for their first loss and started in a similar way as the Lions against StuSta. Quentin placed two excellent kicks for Connor, who ran behind the lines of the Spielgemeinschaft to collect the ball and run safely to deposit it behind the try line. Giorgio L and Daniel C, both on the wings, showed what they are capable of, if they get a few meters to pick up speed. Once they go, very few people can stop them (Timo is one of them!). So, they scored two tries each, three Connor and one Quentin for a total of eight tries to null.
After only a few minutes to rest and drink some water, the match plan foresaw another game for the Tigers! Now it was their turn to play against the StuSta/Wurzburg team. If they were thinking that one match after the other would have tired the Tigers and made them an easy prey, well, the StuSta/WRK players realised soon enough that it was not going to be the case. Once again, Giorgio L., twice, Daniel C., Quentin and Connor made it absolutely clear that the Tigers were far from being easily beaten. They played relentlessly, in spite of the fierce defence by the opponents. Orlando was the perfect example of the dedication and commitment. He never feared the contact and was often the first one to be where the action  was. Unfortunately, after a tackle, resulting in a ruck (won by the Tigers), he got injured at one ankle and had to leave the pitch carried by two helpers. At the moment of writing, we do not know how his condition is. Hopefully, the incident will not keep him away for too long. We should also report a yellow card to Connor for a “slightly“ high tackle, just above the chest line. Very correct from the referee.
Last, but not least, the final match of the U14 tournament was the Lions vs. RCReg./RCUnterf./Nürnb. The Lions had the wait for over 45 minutes to play their last game and this must have given them extra motivation. In particular to Timo, who scored six tries, joined by Anton with three and Chris with two. There is not much to be said about this match. The number of tries in relation to the playing time (7 minutes per half-time) could give an idea, though.
In the end, the MRFC teams were first and second whereby, in terms of points for the championship, they count as one. We were also very fortunate with the weather and the tournament had been well organised by Aidan & Co. Not to mention the warm hospitality that we always experience in Nürnberg. Another successful and positively eventful rugby tournament for the U14 MRFC.

Our team won 2 matchs against Gröbenzell (8-5) and Erfurt (5-3), and lost 2 matchs against Regensburg (4-5) and Unterföhring (4-7). With our second place of the tournament, we equalize our best performance of the year in a bavarian tournament. All the players were involved and 8 players among 12 scored tries: Mateo 7x, Hendrik 5x, Joseph 4x, Mario 1x, Blaise 1x, Victor 1x, Jan 1x, Antonin 1x. 3. RVBY-Rugby Turnier in Regensburg U8 und U10
26. November 2017

U8:
Bericht: Rica Hiemstra
The first snow of the year gave Munich at the morning of the 26th of November a nice sugary layer. Fortunately we left that behind us and found a cloudy but dry Regensburg. On grounds situated directly at the Danube river, Rugby Club  Regensburg hosted the 3rd Bavarian Rugby Tournament of this year. Désirée and Audrey performed very well as substitute coaches, Lisa attending a trainers course at the same time. Despite some absences due to illness, our U8 team entered the tournament with four players: Livia, Tommaso, Maxence and Cajus. Together with Gröbenzell a nice ´Spielgemeinschaft´ was formed. After making acquaintance it was decided to play the first game in black/orange and the second game in MRFC Blue. Our first game was against a Rugby Club Plzen from Czech Republic. It was a very nice, lively game and both teams were matched in strength. The children showed their technical skills in making rucks and a mauls. The team passed the ball very well to each other and tried to form (and stay!) in a line. Maxence made two tries and the other tries were made by the Gröbenzell players. We lost the game with 5 to 8. The game was very nice to watch especially because our young players really tried to apply the technical skills they learned during training, like forming a line and passing the ball further down the line.
The second and the last game we played was against Unterföhring. This time we played in our own blue shirts and Maxence was our captain. The Unterföhring team is strong and has good technical skills. So we knew it would be hard to win. Our ´Spielgemeinschaft´ managed very well and gave their best. Although we did good in the first game, we still need to work on our passing skills and forming a line. In that way we won´t let any players from the other team get through our defense. This game was also lost: 1 to 8.
