1. Spiel: MRFC/RFCA – RC Pilsen/RC Studentenstadt/SV Anzing 15:15
Versuche: Samuel Boetius, Mateo Nieto Déliz, Rupert Hollow

U12:
Bericht: Gennaro De Lucia
After the excitement and big buzz of the Frankfurt Rugby Youth Festival, we returned to compete for the U12 Bavarian championship with 7-a-side teams. Due to the late addition of the date to the championship’s calendar, a few of the players were absent. However, including last minute enrolments, fourteen MRFC players arrived at the pitch in Anzing. We registered one team of twelve (the maximum number of players allowed) which meant that two of the MRFC players played with a “Piratenmannschaft”. Emilia and Christian accepted to be the two “chosen ones” and in the end, their team spirit and loyalty towards the MRFC strategy, paid off. Both of them played full time every match. Christian became the captain of the Piratenmannschaft and fought every match like a lion and Emilia scored a try in her usual way: running fast on the wing! In the end, they fully lived the principles of rugby: respect, enjoyment, fight honestly and give the best you can. Well done Emilia and Cristian and thank you from the whole team! The rest of the twelve MRFC players were well determined to make the most of the day, in order to maintain the first position in the championship ranking. The first match was against the Piratenmannschaft, a mixture of Czech, Bavarian, British and Italian players. Maybe, due to the fact that they had never played together, it was easy for the MRFC Lions, who knew each other better, to win the match. Our wings flew 5 times to the try line and deposited the ball in the try zone. Captain Quentin put the final word with a sixth try. Only one try was conceded by the MRFC Lions to the fair and fearless “pirates”. The second match risked to be a completely different game as we were about to play against Regensburg, a well organized and skillful team, which is second in the championship and make use of every opportunity to catch the MRFC up. Well, the MRFC players did not let themselves get impressed by the opponents and started the match with a try by Bruno. Thanks to the ice-breaker, the rest of the match saw the MRFC entering the rucks very effectively, winning most of them and then passing the ball through the centers and finally reaching the wings, who could score 4 times. The defence led by the outstanding tackling of Quentin and Alexis was also very good and conceded no try at all to a strong and fair opponent. After lunch, the last two matches of the day were about to start. The first one was against a “Spielgemeinschaft” StuSta/Augsburg. This was probably the toughest game of the tournament. The opponents were playing rough and sometimes committed harsh fouls, e.g. high tackling. The referee, though, kept a watchful eye and managed to calm down the emotions. In spite of the “roughness”, the MRFC did not lose their concentration and confidence and kept well on track to reach the goal of the day: winning the tournament. In the end, the fearless Lions pocketed another clear victory against a tough opponent: 25:05. A few minutes later, the last match was already waiting for us. This time it was against the RC Unterföhring. The managers were a bit concerned about the fact that the two last matches, timewise, were very close to one another. It turned out that only the managers were concerned, because the players were on a roll after three victories. Maybe also thanks to the fact of having enough replacements, which had been well managed by Antoine, the MRFC Lions seemed to have endless resources of energy. In 14 minutes, they scored 10 tries. That certainly was a glorious way to end the day and to ensure the victory of the tournament, too.
It has been an eventful day, in spite of the relentless rain during the whole tournament, which did not affect the commitment of the team. As Martin nicely
summarised it: “Without some of their big stars, everybody stepped up their game and the kids overall played very well together (certainly more passes than at the beginning of the season). Congrats to David and Antoine and a big special thanks to Antoine for suffering through the rain with us.”

The MRFC U14s participated in the RVBy 7-a-side tournament held in Bad Reichenhall on 7/5/2017. Despite the rainy conditions the team played excellent rugby. They lost their first game 15-25 to the SG SC Gröbenzell/TuS Rugby Fürstenfeldbruck but came back strong to beat the Rugby Club Regensburg 2000/Studentenstadt Rugby Club pirate team 15-10 and RFC Bad Reichenhall 30-15 to finish 2nd in the tournament, won by the SG SCG/FFB. Player of the day for MRFC U14s was Timo Bode for outstanding defence and attack, including several tries.

Internationales Rugby Festival in Frankfurt U12 und U14
29. April 2017

U12:
Bericht: Martin Kerschensteiner
This weekend we escaped the recent rain-snow-rain fiasco that currently passes as weather in Munich to go to sunny Frankfurt and participate in the International Youth Rugby Festival that brought together over 1000 U8-U14 players and teams from 9 nations (including traditional Rugby powerhouses like England, France and The Netherlands….just joking ..of course England, France and Italy). In short we had a blast ! In a bit longer.. the blast actually started a bit rough as we lost our first two games of the tournament. The story of these games was however quite different. In the first game we encountered a very  strong team from RC Boitsfort (last year`s winner of the tournament and this year’s eventual 3rd place team). We managed to play a very competitive game, tackled well, contested the rucks and managed to move the ball forward. In the end and probably not helped by some questionable “high tackle” calls we lost the game by 3 tries to 1 but the managers were proud of everyone`s effort and the overall play of the team. “Played like lions” was Gennaro`s fitting summary.
In the next game against a tactically disciplined and clever but overall beatable team from Tatra Smichov we managed to play less like lions and more like disoriented kittens. As a result we gifted 3 tries to the opposition in the first half by a combination of overall poor concentration and questionable decision-making under pressure. After a somewhat animated wake-up call from our manager, trainer, organizer extraordinaire Gennaro at half time, the team played much better in the second half, which we won by 1 try to zero. But in the end the damage was done, the managers lost about 5 years of the life expectancy and the team unfortunately any chance of playing in the “Champions Round”.
After some tears from our players and some soul- and coffee-searching from the traveling party however our team pulled together and set our sights on finishing in the Top 10, which would be an excellent result for such a strong international tournament. The biggest obstacle was up next, a strong team from Berlin (Berliner RC) that had beat us by 40:0 on their way to finishing 3rd in last year’s German Championship. It speaks volume about our players and makes trainers and managers very proud that our team managed to “dig deep” and play an outstanding game of team rugby resulting in a well-deserved 25:15 victory.
After this the mood of the team was switched to happy again and the perspective of a soon waiting Pizza was all the motivation needed for another focussed effort that resulted in a convincing 30:05 victory against RK Heusenstamm. This meant 2 things: 1) that we could now get our turko-italian Pizza soon thereafter and 2) that we would be playing the other teams that finished 3rd in their respective pools to play for the overall 9-12th place of the tournament. After an introduction to “ancient” Roman drinking traditions for the adult (”Gnight my love” is all I am saying) and a good night of sleep (for the kids), we attacked the second tournament day with a Top 10 finish firmly in our sights.
Our trainer Antoine joined us fresh off a decisive victory with the first team and managed the boys to three straight victories against good teams from Spain (Alcobendas Rugby II), Berlin (BSV Berlin 92) and Italy (CUS Padova). In the end we thus reached our Top 10 finish and were placed 9th out of 21 teams (and next to our friends from Tatra who finished 8th) – an outstanding result for our team !!
While many aspects can still be improved (such as passing the ball at the right time to the right person at approximately the right height), our team overall showed an improved offensive and defensive organisation together with strong rucking, assertive tackling and decisive runs. Our biggest strength of course remains the fighting spirit of our Italian-French-Irish-Bavarian lions. If extra motivation for the upcoming DM is needed one might point out that we did not lose against a German team in this tournament and that only 3 German teams (SC 1880 Frankfurt, Hannover 78 and SC Neuenheim) finished better than us. Let’s go lions !

An 18 man squad prepared for the Frankfurt Internationales Rugby-Jugendfestival 2017 held over the weekend of 29/30 April 2017. Unfortunately 3 of the squad had to withdraw due to illness at the last minute and so it was a 15 man squad who travelled to Frankfurt to contest the 16 team, 13-a-side tournament. Competition was tough! Munich was grouped with SC Frankfurt 1880 (2016 Deutsche Meister and tournament runner up form 2016), Bank of England and RC Tatar Smichov. Although Munich lost all three group games, they played well and with pride and contested all three matches to the last with a never say die attitude rewarded with tries against RC Tatar Smichov in the 2nd game and Bank of England in the third. They thus finished 4th in the group which thus put them in the day-2 playoffs for 13th-16th places. They then had a comfortable 40-0 win first up against ASCAP Montbéliard before facing SG Odin/Hannover 78 in their final game of the tournament.despite a heroic 2nd half, 78 prevailed, and MRFC finished an honourable 14th in the tournament.

4. RVBY-Rugby Turnier in der Studentenstadt München U12 und U14
2. April 2017

U12:
Bericht: Gennaro De Lucia
The U12 MRFC presented at the Bavarian tournament in StuSta two teams in their age category. This tournament was the first one in 2017 and the “boys” were all excited to take part in it. As usual at these events, there were some “spare players” from different clubs and having just about the numbers for two teams (14), the MRFC took on board Yannick from the RC Augsburg . The other teams in the U12 category were: SG Unterföhring/Anzing, RC Regensburg 2000 and our hosts of StuSta.
The Lions and the Tigers had their first matches concurrently. The Lions played against SG Unterföhring/Anzing and the Tigers against StuSta. Even though parents, managers and David had to “divide” their attention over two pitches, that did not stop both MRFC teams to win their respective matches. Thanks to Alexis, Connor (5 tries each), Patraic (2x) and Quentin, the Lions won 65:05 and the Tigers 40:10 with tries by Giorgio L (4x), Orlando (2x), Eliseo and Christian. Both results speak for themselves. The Lions and the Tigers played very well and put into practice the skills learned at the training sessions. There is always room for improvement, but it is clear that the individual, as well as the group proficiency levels are improving quickly.
The next match involving the MRFC saw the Lions vs. StuSta. The MRFC boys led by Captain Quentin and supported for half-time by Yannick (RC Augsburg), did not sit down on the laurels of the first victory. They used every opportunity to attack the defence of the StuSta team and managed to fence off their attacks very effectively.  Connor kept breaking through the opponents’ lines and when he did not score himself, he passed on the ball to a team mate allowing him to score a try. The match ended 55:05 for the Lions with tries by Connor (3x), Yannick (3x), Alexis, Quentin (2x each) and Patraic.
Then it came the time for the two MRFC teams to play against each other! This was a close match, proving that the U12 managers and trainers had set up two balanced groups. Until the last moment, it was not clear which team was going to win. The Lions had a strong start, again with Connor, Quentin and Patraic, but the Tigers kept scoring, too, with Giorgio and Orlando not allowing their “club mates” to take too much advantage. Especially in the second half, the Tigers defended better and managed to put the ball behind the try-line again with Giorgio (2x) and Eliseo. We do not know what could have happened if the top scorers of the tournament, Connor (2x) and Alexis hadn’t scored again for the Lions and the Tigers hadn’t ran out of time. Final score: Lions beat Tigers 30:25.
Following a relatively longer break to allow referees and organisers some rest, the Lions met the RC Regensburg 2000, which had also won all their matches, so far. It was a fierce game. Both teams delivered strong attacks and even stronger defences. The Lions made good use of their ability to ruck together with players like Lucas, Connor and Noah (though smaller, never afraid to tackle or to dive into a ruck) and to pass the ball to the well-positioned “centres” and “wings”. At the end of the match, exhausted, but very content the Lions got their fourth victory in a row in their final game of the tournament: 25:10 for the MRFC Lions, with tries by Quentin (4x) and Alexis.
Around 30 minutes later, just to give time to the guys from Regensburg to recover, the last match in the U12 category was set to go. The MRFC Tigers led by Captain Eliseo started the game very determined and scored, very quickly, 3 tries with Christian (2x) and Emilia and defended excellently allowing only one try to the opponent RC Regensburg. Unfortunately, the second half took a different turn. Maybe due to the confidence of leading or maybe due to tiredness the Tigers’ performance lost a bit of their initial strength so that the Regensburg boys came back scoring 3 tries against only one (Giorgio) of the MRFC team.  Even more unfortunate was the fact the equalising try of the RC Regensburg came together with the whistle of the referee marking the end of the match ... 20:20. This was probably the game with most pathos of the whole tournament in the U12 category. This was confirmed also by the referee in his closing speech. When addressing both squads, he underlined that in rugby one should give one’s best until the very last moment! He spoke very highly of both teams.
Last but not least, always remember: “Every try is the result of a team effort hence, an achievement of the whole team.”

U14:
Bericht: Alléssandro Cossu
After their fruitful mini-tour to Italy last week, the U14 Lions played the first Bavarian tournament of the second half of the season with only eight players, due to several injuries and previous committments. Despite the limited resources the MRFC secured two large wins against StuSta amd a mixed Bavarian team comprising Nuremberg and a number of players from different Bavarian clubs. In the match against table leaders SC Gröbenzell, the Lions played a catch-me-if-you can game, with Munich taking the lead first (courtesy of Vincent, our Swiss/Italian/Bavarian Picamoles) and Gröbenzell then matching the first Munich try; Gröbenzell went ahead with a second try and Munich riposted quickly twice with Oscar, thus regaining th lead; with both teams tied at 20:20, after a series of attacks Gröbenzell succeeded in overcoming the Lions.
A good display by the players present on the pitch; however, more committment is required from the other players who did not turn up, if the Lions are to play at the DM.

4. RVBY-Rugby Turnier in der Studentenstadt München U8 und U10
2. April 2017

U8:
Bericht: Jean de Broissia
The U8 played the first Bavarian tournament of the second half of the season. For the first time they had a full team of 7 players, which has been completed with 4 Stusta players. They began with a win against Regensburg, with good individual actions. Then they had an hard match against RCU, and finished with a large win against Gröbenzell. They learned how to accept trials from other teams without being too disappointed (and not crying..), defend (inline positioning), and playing more and more as a team with a good team spirit.

2.Platz

U10:
Bericht: Zoe Chioato
